My comments pertain to the draft EIS for the Longview coal export facility. I hope you will give them good consideration.
Stopping the coal terminal will not stop Asia from importing coal, but it will stop them from using high quality coal mined in the United States. Other suppliers on the market will fill this demand with coal that has increased mercury, sulfur and nitrogen oxides. During the permitting process, officials should remember the fact that not one ton more of coal will be used globally because of this project, and the net gain in greenhouse gas emissions is insignificant.
Cowlitz County is fraught with uncertainty. Millennium’s proposal, however, offers all the economic benefits of a long-term port facility without any of the uncertainty. Coal is needed by other countries to help shape their future and enhance their quality of life. Let's give other countries the living standards we have for ourselves.
