Allow me to voice my strong support for the proposed port at Longview. We need to move on as quickly as possible. The draft EIS is sufficient and complete â€" it’s time for progress. What most folks in Seattle tend to forget is that not everyone in Washington lives in Puget Sound. Not all of us work in the high-tech industry, and we still earn good livings as farmers, working at ports or in manufacturing. We make things, harvest and develop natural resources, feed our community and help facilitate trade in our great state. And we need more jobs like this â€" especially in Cowlitz County where our unemployment rate is 8 percent. Millennium Bulk Terminals can bring great jobs to our county â€" not to mention the much-needed tax revenues. Let’s not forget about how much time, effort and money Millennium has spent to clean up the port. Frankly, it was an environmental blight on our community, but now it will be a critical link for expanding trade for Southwest Washington. Again, having good jobs and protecting the environment can go hand in hand. We hear a lot of opinions about coal, but the reality of the Millennium Project is that it will have state-of-the-art equipment and best of all will bring life back to a site that has been left stagnant for some time. Many of us would love to have the opportunity to spend our entire career in one place. Millennium is offering that to us. Why not take advantage?
