Coal is a finite resource and when it runs out or it is outlawed, the people of Longview will be unemployed again. If we export coal to Asia, we are vulnerable to the ups and downs of the Asian market. The communities of the Pacific Northwest have the capability of being self-sufficient. We do not need to wait for CEOs from outside the northwest to put us to work. Agriculture is a recession-proof industry. Extraction industries have a long history of kicking workers to the curb when they are no longer needed. The communities in this country where coal is mined are generally all still poor. Since 2012 more than 40 coal companies have gone bankrupt. The only person saying that coal dust is not an issue is the CEO of the coal company. Many of the people advising against the terminal are doctors and nurses. We who are anti-terminal are not in this for financial gain. There is no ulterior motive, we only want to live in a region free of cancer, lead poisoning, infant mortality, and birth defects. We want to live in a region where we can swim without getting sick. Accidents do happen, an oil train derailed and exploded in Canada killing 42 people. Another oil train derailed and exploded near Hood River spilling 42,000 gallons of crude into the Gorge. This is enough. Do the right thing.
