Submission Text
The Columbia River Gorge Commission is submitting a comment letter for the Millennium Bulk Terminal Longview DEIS. The Commission is extremely concerned about the human health and environmental impacts from increased fugitive coal dust emissions, as well as impacts associated with rail accidents that result in spills, explosions and fires, and an increase in needed maintenance that will be required from the additional number of trains passing through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The DEIS does not adequately recognize the special and unique status of the National Scenic Area, nor does it accurately predict the impacts from coal dust emissions based on the data they used. More details are in the attached comment letter. In addition we are attaching a resolution passed by the Commission regarding our position on fossil fuel transport risks through the National Scenic Area.
